It’s a first-ever holiday offering for Tennessee Women’s Theater Project as the acclaimed professional troupe continues its 2015-16 season with the Tennessee premiere of Ginna Hoben‘s well-received comic romp The Twelve Dates of Christmas. The side-splitting one-woman play starring the ever-versatile Rebekah Durham opens Dec. 4 for a limited seven-performance run at the Z. Alexander Looby Theater (2301 Rosa L. Parks Blvd.).
Mary is visiting her family at home in Ohio for Thanksgiving. She switches on the Macy’s Parade and spots her fiancé back in New York — kissing another woman on national TV! That startling image begins a year of ridiculous romances and hapless holidays (with a healthy dose of laughter) as Mary recounts her journey from the depths of heartbreak to a new sense of emotional balance. Durham, who was last seen at TWTP as the mother in the 2013 production of Distracted, plays a colorful collection of characters in addition to Mary: her well-meaning friends and family members, her dates and more.
Founder and Artistic Director Maryanna Clarke says, “I’ve wanted to produce a holiday-themed show for a long time, but until now we’ve never had the perfect combination: the right play, the right opening in the calendar and the enthusiastic support of our venue partners, Metro Parks Theater Department.” The production is supported by grants from the Metro Nashville Arts Commission and the Tennessee Arts Commission.
The Twelve Dates of Christmas premiered in 2010 at American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, Va. It has been produced by more than a dozen regional theaters in America, and in such far-flung locations as Birmingham, England and Alberton, South Africa.
There will be evening performances Thursday through Saturday, as well as two Sunday matinees, during the show’s run from Dec. 4 to Dec. 13. All tickets for this production are $25. NOTE: This show contains adult language and is recommended for mature audiences.
