On Wednesday, October 4, Chaffin’s Barn Dinner Theatre will break the fourth wall of their current regional premiere production of MAMMA MIA when they invite the audience to join in on the fun for a one-night-only Sing-A-Long performance of the hit show featuring the songs of supergroup ABBA.
When I recent chatted with MAMMA MIA show director, Bradley Moore and some of the cast for my latest Rapid Fire 20 Q, several of ABBA’s greatest hits were mentioned as personal favorites. Moore was first to mention not one the show’s titular tune, but also one of ABBA’s biggest hits, saying, “I grew up of course knowing Dancing Queen and Mamma Mia, but the musical allowed me to dig deeper into their catalog. It has been a fun journey researching their music and watching all of their music videos. It is really extremely difficult to not love ABBA.”
Former X-Factor contestant and Broadway alum (The Addams Family Musical, Evita) Rachel Potter, who stars in Chaffin’s MAMMA MIA as Sophie, mirrored Moore’s sentiment about Dancing Queen, but also revealed a new favorite, “My favorite has always been Dancing Queen and continues to remain one of my faves. But through this process, I have definitely fallen in love with Thank You for the Music. I lost my dad last year, and he was a musician, so it makes me think of him every time I sing it.”
Currently starring opposite Potter is Taylor Novak, as Sky. When asked of his favorite ABBA tune, he replied, “Hands down, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! It’s my favorite song in the show, and it’s my favorite ABBA song. Girls rule.”
Tickets for the special event are only $10. For an additional fee, there’ll also be full bar service with ABBA-themed concoctions served up in special MAMMMA MIA keepsake glasses, as well as the option to order from Chaffin’s latest culinary bonus, their new small plates menu.
Chaffin’s new a la cart menu includes everything from Boneless Hot Nashville Chicken Strips, Cheeseburger Sliders, Chicken Salad Sandwiches or a Soup and Salad combo to Assorted Cheeses and Crackers, Hummus and Pita Chips, Farmer Caviar and Chips (my new favorite) and many more options. Small plate options will be available until intermission during Wednesday night’s Sing-A-Long event.
Of Wednesday night’s event, director Moore enthused, “The MAMMA MIA Sing-A-Long will be the best theatre party of the year! You get to watch an amazing show and sing along to every word! No need to hide your love of ABBA!”
As a lifelong fan of ABBA and a fifteen-year fan of MAMMA MIA, I’d say he’s not overselling it one bit. That’s the thing about ABBA, whether you grew up listening to their music or not, chances are you know the songs, as they’ve permeated pop culture throughout the past five decades.
